Built by the occupation forces during the Second World War, and was at the time regarded as the strongest fortress in Northern Europe.

The work started in 1942 and continued until the capitulation in 1945. The fortress constituted a part of the “Atlantic wall” from The Arctic Ocean to the Pyrenees.
The underground complex consists of approximately 3 km of tunnels and a garrison, that could potentially house several hundred soldiers, including kitchen facilities, heating, laundry, bathrooms, storage etc.
