I stumbled across an old factory building in Poblenou a while ago, where strayers with the shopping carts bring the valuable materials that they collect from garbage bins around the city. Unfortunately, they didn’t allow me to take any photos of the place, which was totally run-down and filled with dreadful smoke from an open fire inside where they burned appliances and the like. Most of the people didn’t want to be in any photos either – which is understandable as this whole undertaking seems to be illegal as one black man told me. This woman however, who takes care of the separation of the garbage, escorted me outside and was willing to pose for a portrait.
