During a Washington, DC visit several weeks ago, we happened to be walking around the Capitol Building at dusk. There was a glimmer of fading sunlight on the dome and the sky was streaked with wispy clouds. Nice time for a visit. - JW

This image was processed using HDR software but since only a single image was used, only the tone-mapping stage came into play. Hence this image is tone-mapped and not strictly HDR.

This image was taken using a hand-held Nikon D5000 fitted with a Nikkor 18-105mm lense set to 18mm, ISO200, Aperture priority mode, f/5.6, 1/400 sec. HDR processing was done using Luminance/Qtpfsgui with settings as indicated in the file name and/or the settings summary below. PP in GIMP: loaded the image twice as separate layers labeled main for the top layer and lamps for the lower layer, the main layer was adjusted suing the tone curve tool to overall darken the image and bring out the sky detail but in so doing the lamps became too dark, edited the lamp layer to brighten the lamps, then using a soft-edged eraser deleted the lamp areas from the top/main layer to reveal the better lamp detail below, made new layer from visible result, slightly increase contrast as well as saturation, sharpened, added fine black and white frame, added bar and text on left, scaled to 1024 wide for posting.

Qtpfsgui 1.9.3 tonemapping parameters:
Operator: Mantiuk
Contrast Mapping factor: 0.1
Saturation Factor: 0.8
Detail Factor: 4
PreGamma: 1
