At the Hammer And Chisel mine in Germany the first shaft was sunk in 1894, and despite wartime damage to the mine repairs were made and in 1986 an eighth and final shaft was created before the eventual close of the mine in 2000.

At it's peak there were over 3,000 people working the mine, reaching an approximate annual production of 2 million tonnes.

This is steam carrier bay 3, currently under restoration which should see it back to working condition.
