A gray yearling from Yellowstone's Canyon Pack pauses near a carcass on New Year's Eve, 2011. This was one of my best wolf encounters to date. The carcass was positioned on the other side of the Gardner River, less than 25 yards from the road. We waited much of the day for the wolves to come down to feed and they finally did in the late afternoon. Only the alpha female was brave enough to get onto the carcass with all the onlookers, but three other members of the pack also came quite close.
