An eerie otherworldliness surrounds the Bisti Badlands in Northwestern New Mexico, a vast, mostly unknown wilderness of hoodoos, strange rock formations and bewildering mazes. This was once a part of a vast underwater sea and when the water recede it eroded the rocks into the fantastical formations seen today.

The area is almost entirely devoid of life, human or otherwise. When trail guides warn that these Badlands are disorienting they are telling the truth. Shortly after this sunset photo was taken darkness descended upon us and we became lost amidst the maze of passageways and we were unable to find our way back down to level ground. Aided only by the moonlight and our small flashlights it took us over three hours to return to terra firma. My advice: come for the sunrises not the sunsets and bring a GPS!
