The reddish gold fur and black stripes stand out in captivity, but in the wild these markings act as camouflage. As tigers move, their stripes appear to change their shape and blend them into their surroundings.
There were 8 sub-species of tiger, but sadly 3 of these became extinct in the 20th Century. Bengal tigers now count for nearly half of all tiger numbers.
Rarely the Bengal tigers produce white specimens. They are not a seperate sub-species and they are not albino, but they have reduced pigment - known as leucism.
