In the Val Pusteria, like in other regions of the Dolomites, there are areas where the sun never reaches during the winter months. What this creates is a sort of permafrost world. The additional humidity created by the atmosphere and/or creeks generates a bizzare world of plants, trees and the ground itself lying in a deep freeze, waiting for the thaw of spring to come back to life.
