The bees grip the stem with their interlocking and powerful jaws. They never use their legs and during the day I occasionally see them grip a stem like this but then wiggle back and forth. I think this is how they groom and remove excess pollen.

When they fly they make a distinctive buzzing sound and can hover while searching for flowers to land on.
