While photographing an amazing sunrise over The Castles near Ohio Pass in Colorado I threw on my telephoto lens as the clouds were clearing. Hoping to get a dramatic close-up of The Castles I was able to get a few shots before the fast moving storm cleared completely. When I made it home at the end of my trip I processed the colorful wide angle shots and forgot all about the close-ups for a few months. As I started working on the second edition of my Colorado Fall Colors book I came across the images again and I just knew this one would sing in B&W.
I used Adobe LR for the initial RAW processing then moved to Nik Color Efex Pro for the B&W conversion. After dialing the B&W settings I brought the image back into LR for the final touches. The finished image brought to life my view for the scene, a dramatic natural castle rising above the surrounding landscape.
