As the light wind causes ripples on the suface of Convict Lake I can imagine what this area must have looked like back on September 23, 1871, when a group of convicts that had escaped from prison in Carson City showed up in this box canyon that forms the lake.. A posse, from Benton, led by Deputy Sheriff George Hightower, encountered the convicts near the head of what is now Convict Creek to the left of this image. Posse member Robert Morrison, a Benton merchant and Wells Fargo Agent, was killed in the encounter, and Mount Morrison was named after him.

Not much has changed around the lake since that time... If you have not been to this area, I cannot recommend it higher...
