Bothrops asper, known in Costa Rica as terciopelo.
Its a venomous pit viper found from Mexico to South America. This species cause a large numbers of accidents since it likes to remain close to humans and their homes. They like to be close to streams and rivers, are mostly nocturnal and solitary. It is easy to find them sun bathing during the day on well exposed light gaps, some times in the middle of a path or trail.
