This is the Big Painted Canyon. These high canyon walls have been created of many years of water and wind erosion. Local seismic activity and a long ago magma bubble have also left their foot print here. The people at the bottom give you some perspective to just how tall the canyon walls are.

The Painted Canyons are a series of canyons located near Mecca, California. They are most known for the Ladder Canyon trail, where you climb ladders as part of your hike. There are 2 side canyons that are also popular, the Big and Little painted canyons. We did an out and back on the Big Canyon trail. You can find these canyons off Box Canyon Road (Ave 66) between Hwy 111 and I10. Best to do these in the Winter, when it is not hot!
