Yesterday was my first opportunity to photograph an American Mink. My friend and I were waiting for the ferry to take us from the mainland to Amherst Island in Lake Ontario about 2.5 hours drive from Ottawa. I happened to glance along the shore and saw this mink moving away from near the ferry wharf.

The mink was moving amongst a windrow of ice pieces that had blow up along the length of the shore. The wind have created tunnels amongst the pieces. I ended up running along for about 1 Km trying to stay a few metres ahead of the mink and getting ready to take a shot whenever it popped up.

Taken handheld using my 500mm F4 + 1.4 teleconverter.

The American Mink (Neovison vison) is a member of the Mustelid family link the otter, skunk and weasel.
