Porsche's first purpose-built race car, this 550, the first of two prototypes built, won it's maiden race. The two cars then ran at Le Mans, staying within a lap of each other the entire 24 hours, winning their class and setting a new record.

Both cars then ran the 1954 La Carrera Panamericana Mexico. This car survived - found in a warehouse in Mexico with a fiberglass replacement body - while it's sister car has not been found.

I photographed this car at The Allure of the Automobile exhibit in Portland, Oregon, 2011. All museum lighting, no flash used. The lighting was quite subdued, and I processed the image to reflect that; not much brightness to be found at this exhibit!
