Qixingtan was once the name of a series of small lakes situated where the Hualien Airport now stands. But in 1936, Taiwan’s Japanese rulers filled in the lakes as part of a modernization drive, and the local people retreated to the coastal area.
The beautiful area of coastline lies at the tip of a crescent bay overlooking the blue-green Pacific Ocean is now call Qixingtan by their descendants.
