After a trip up to the brooks range in northern Alaska then avoiding the Chena hot springs (that I just feel has been done) I heard there had been a major solar flare so I stayed south to photograph the aurora over open water. While the majority of photographers were up north capturing amazing images with trees and mountains that I had already captured on this trip I took a chance and stayed south. It was epic compositions over open water or nothing on this night and the gamble payed off as one of the best aurora displays in years hit Alaska. I photographed with great friends from Anchorage to just before Homer when the sun came up. One of the most amazing sights I have ever witnessed and keep in mind I spend my days on the edge of an active volcano so that is saying a lot.
