It's interesting to see the contortions a duck will engage in to preen itself, as exemplified by this female mallard. Although, here the mallard looks like she's gone too far, and is calling out for a chiropractor!

Ducks have a preen gland near their tales which produces oil. The duck picks up the oil with its head and beak, and then smears the oil all over its body as a protective barrier. I always assumed that oils were produced under the feathers, all over the body, which would make less work for the duck.
