Often reputed to be one of the most prominent examples of Gothic architecture in both France and in Europe as a whole, Paris's Notre Dame Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame) is one of the oldest gothic cathedrals in France. Building began in 1163 and ended 1345. Dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus (thus the name "Notre Dame", Our Lady), it lies in the small island of la Cité in Paris, surronded by the river Seine.
