Is a shrub or vine of the Olive family (Oleaceae). It is fragrant and used for worship and worn as hair ornaments by women and girls in Southern India. It is also grown at home in pots and gardens. Madurai, a city in Tamilnadu is famous for these flowers and is called as 'Madurai Malli'. It's essence is used in perfumes, incense, flavoring and in China is used to make tea. It opens its petals between 6-8pm when the temperature drops and it's petals tightly shut in the morning when it's plucked and stored in a cool dry place for use. It's a very common sight to see street vendors selling jasmine especially outside temples.
