Any landscape photography textbook will say planning and patience are prerequisites for capturing this kind of picture. But magical moments like this are rare, fleeting and impossible to predict, so you also need to be flexible and have the ability to work quickly. On this morning I was initially heading to another tor for sunrise but upon noticing the mist choking the valley at Two Bridges, I changed plans and instead walked towards Wistman’s Wood to capture the trees in misty conditions. Upon arriving at Wistman’s Wood I was disappointed to find that the woods were quite clear of mist, so with time running out before sunrise I decided to change plans again and quickly made for Littaford Tor above the woods. Upon reaching the tor the rocks were surrounded by thick mist, but as soon as the sun broke through the mist cleared in a matter of seconds, changing the atmosphere completely. Fortunately I had already set the camera up and managed to capture this image, and I’m very glad I did too!
