In the 19th century, with few navigation lights, the south shore of Lake Superior along Michigan's upper peninsula was a dangerous place for sailors, claiming dozens of ships. So in 1874 a lighthouse was built on Au Sable point. But the lighthouse was of no help when the Mary Jarecki was caught in fog and grounded on Au Sable reef on July 4, 1883.
