With just two weeks to go before I find myself once again marvelling at the beauty of Kenya's Masai Mara, thoughts and memories of previous African adventures keep coming to mind, and just the other day it dawned on me that I still had many photos to sort through from my time in South Africa back in 2011, so I thought why not see if there are a few gems I'd previously overlooked, and this is one of a few I came up with!

While planning that trip to South Africa, being a little apprehensive due to reports I'd read of people who complained about infrequent cat sightings in Kruger National Park for all its brush and vegetation, though I still very much wanted to experience this famous reserve I'd dreamt about for so long, I hedged my bets by acting on the recommendation of a friend who suggested I stay at a private sanctuary for orphaned and rescued wild cats in Limpopo Province before heading off on safari in the Kruger.

As things turned out, it was the best decision I made: while in the Kruger we did have one amazing encounter with a cheetah, a solitary sighting of a distant leopard in poor ambient light, and saw several lions though seemingly never with an unobstructed view, had I returned home to Thailand from that trip not having had such fantastic opportunities first in the private reserve, I would have been somewhat disappointed to say the least with the few good frames I captured on safari.

At the private reserve I got to work up-close with lions, leopards, cheetahs, and even a rare and beautiful lady king cheetah, but by far my favourite subject was this gorgeous 6-month old caracal cub by the name of Karoo; Karoo completely and utterly stole my heart; having been hand-raised from birth, he was about as tame and playful as you would expect any domestic kitten to be.

Thanks for taking an interest and wishing you all a wonderful weekend :^)
