Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, is located just outside of Gainesville, FL in Alachua County. It is a fascinating place, rich in wildlife and fauna, and an amazing history behind it. Originally settled by the Spanish in the 1600's, wild horses which are actual descendants of those living there many hundreds of years ago, actually roam wild and free. In addition, there are still numerous bison, which though not natural to the land, also were brought over by the Spanish.

On this particular day, Paynes Prairie Preserve was extremely dry, with little water and harsh dry conditions where the lush used to be. They say it's been that way for several months. We were quite shocked by it. Consequently the wildlife was much more scarce, as they headed for the more "wet" areas of the preserve. Just passing sandhill cranes and hawks were pretty much viewed on the savannah.

However, as we were returning on the trail, we could hear something coming upon us .... it was these 3 wild horses running free through the prairie.

Such an amazing sight to see - and hear :-)
