I’ve been eyeballing this cabin for YEARS!Each time I’d drive by Carter Shield’s Cabin on the Cades Cove Loop Road (Smoky Mountains), I would kick around ideas for turning it into a cool photo. I shot photos of it in the Spring, Summer, and even Fall, but never quite got what I was going for.It finally occurred to me what was missing – the cabin always looked so “dead” in the photos. My first thought was that it would look really cool if there were an actual fire in the fireplace, but that idea was quickly followed by the thought of rangers taking me away in handcuffs.Hmm…Instead of an actual fire, maybe a simulated one would be a bit smarter. So, we outfitted a flash with an orange plastic filter and, using a sophisticated radio controlled light setup (i.e. my wife with a walkie-talkie pressing the button on the flash), we waited till twilight and created this image.
