Day 8271 of the Every Day Project.

When I was just a little girl my mother used to have two of these Chinese-looking ornaments on her dresser in her room. I used to be totally fascinated by them. My imagination would run wild with stories of the people who lived in the house. I'd imagine that at night when we were all asleep, they'd come out and live in their magical little world and that during the day they would hide away. To say the least, I adored these ornaments.

The other day my mom was going through an old box and stumbled upon them, leaving them in the kitchen to throw away. When I saw them for the first time I slowly picked one of them up. The first thing I saw was that it was a cheap, plastic ornament. I could see the glue holding all the bits of fragile wood and paper together. The memories of what it was suddenly came back to me, and I couldn't believe how differently I had viewed it 15 years earlier.

A child looks at something and only sees the magic, only sees the beauty. An adult looks at something and sees it for what it is - plastic and wood. As an artist, I always want to see the beauty and magic in the world around me - even if it's not 100% "real". What a beautiful reminder to always look at the world through rose coloured glasses.
