The fishing village sits in Kjøllefjorden and already has 1500's been a trading and meeting place for anglers, Lapps and traders, which is now reflected in the local culture museum Foldalbruket. The long bay provides shelter from the ocean, and has been used as a refuge throughout the ages.
In the early 1900s there were as many as 20 fish processing plant here. It is said that when the fishing was the best, it was so full of docks that you could walk safely across the bay from boat to boat! Fishing is still an important industry in the district.
