The people who had been to Patagonia before me told me that this glacier was an impressive sight, but no words can really prepare you for the scale of this groaning chunk of ice. Roughly 80m high and 5km wide, it sounds like a constant crackling thunderstorm as the ice moves and breaks. It is certainly a special experience watching chunks of ice the size of a bus plunge 50m down into the water and feeling the thunder of the impact. It would however be a lot more special to witness something like this far from human civilization. This glacier is a major tourist attraction that gets thousands of visitors a day and that detracts from the experience. Perito Moreno Glacier is a victim of it's own success.
