White Sands National Monument really is like the beach to New Mexicans. I can say that because I used to live there! It was a long time ago and it was only for like 6 months, but that was plenty long enough to fully absorb what New Mexico had to offer: desert. My wife and I visited this National Monument on Mother's day and we were met by hoards of people out with their beach umbrellas and sand sleds. We found some solitude as we trudged through the sand to our backcountry campsite. As twilight ensued the crowds dwindled, but I still had to trudge further into the dunes to find areas without footprints!
