The American Bison (Bison bison) once roamed much of the United States, parts of Canada and Mexico. Weighing up to 2,200 lbs. (1,000 kg.) and able to run up to 40 mph! (64 km/hr.). they are a formidable beast. At their peak their herd size was estimated at 60,000,000! An important part of the American Indian diet, the bison became nearly extinct by a combination of commercial hunting and slaughter in the 19th century and the introduction of bovine diseases from domestic cattle. By the late 1800's it is estimated that there were only 541 bison remaining! Today there are about 500,000 bison roaming in National Parks in the U.S. and Canada and on commercial ranches. The billionaire Ted Turner, one of the largest private landowners in the U.S.(2,000,000 acres) has a herd of 50,000 head. Turner co-founded Ted's Montana Grill, a restaurant chain specializing in bison meat. In Yellowstone National Park they are a sight to see roaming the plains in the early morning mist! source: Wiki
