A reef puka shot near NELHA on the Kona coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. These are natural holes in the lava reef bench where waves of ocean water rush in and then drain with a roar - a cyclic flushing of the reef. Depending on the size of the surf, it can be subtle or cataclysmic. I love attempting to capture the interplay of light and water motion. Its a trick balancing speed, aperture and exposure.
