Sometimes it's all about the timing. Good positioning can help too, and this guy kicking up a trail of dust was perfectly positioned between me and the setting sun so that the dust trail was beautifully backlit in front of the rolling hills of the Palouse. Shooting in the direction of the sun also meant the possibility of lens flare, and plenty of shots were ruined because of it, but thankfully not all of them.
Initially I wasn't going to convert this to black and white, but I realized that the color detracted from the real appeal of this image for me: the bright dust and the lines of the hills in the background. So after converting it in Nik Silver Efex Pro, I used the Duplex and Glamour Glow filters in Color Efex Pro to soften and enhance those lines, as well as add a subtle tint to the image.
