The Laki lava field in southern Iceland. The eruption of Laki in 1783 killed 20% of the population of Iceland and caused extreme weather conditions as well as crop failure across Europe in the following years. It is even thought that the eruption may have been an indirect cause of the French Revolution in 1789.
