Ever since I was a young boy [and still to this day], I can remember looking on in complete awe at the paintings of steam engines by David Shepherd. 'On Shed', 'Giants at Rest' and 'Over The Forth' being amongst my favourites.

His use of light and the interplay with the steam had such an impact on me. The mix of elements is a little easier to control when illustrating than it is in photography, but this [and other shots] goes some way to capturing the essence of David's work.

60007, 'Sir Nigel Gresley' awaits her turn to take on water at the yard in Grosmont, North Yorkshire Moors Railway. It may sound strange to refer to a male named engine as her, but as with boats etc. they are all referred to as females.
