So difficult to capture out in the open - a female Goldcrest (Regulus regulus) who visited our garden today. Seen briefly this time last year and have been waiting for a return visit - today was the day! These little birds are hyperactive and never stop bobbing about amongst the dense conifer branches.

The Goldcrest is smaller than the Wren and is Europe's smallest bird.
The black-bordered crest stripe is orange in the male and yellow in the female. The dark eye is easily seen against its whitish face. The thin bill is black and the legs are brown. They like to feed on small insects found on conifers.
