This is the ruins of a mesoamerican ballgame court in Toniná, México, a maya city that lasted from 100BC to 1500AD.
This sport, with ritual associations, was played since 1400BC by pre-Columbian peoples of Ancient Mexico and Central America.
The rules of the game are not precisely known, but they were probably similar to the rules of racquetball, where the aim is to keep the ball in play, with the players strucking the ball with their hips.
The game had important ritual aspects, often featuring human sacrifice.
