After great personal loss this spring I decided to go into the wilderness to try to find some solace there. What started out as a few days ended up being about 2 consecutive months in the Columbia River Gorge. Between my 3 workshops there, I simply adventured out alone. During this time I decided to challenge myself to go to a whole host of waterfalls that few have been to, as well as new positions on commonly seen falls. I found that both the challenges and the immense sheer beauty of these areas brought me peace and I came away loving the Gorge like never before (and I LOVED it before). It is now a full blown love affair! With over 100 epic, Jurassic-Hawaii-like waterfalls on just the Oregon side alone, what is not to love?! This next year I again plan to spend ample time here. Again the goal will be to put my body in new, exciting and challenging places to see new things and hopefully come away with a few nice shots.

Because I like to keep things very simple (yet powerful) in post-production, all the typical tonal control techniques, such as blending for dynamic range, were done using the Layer Style “Blend if” sliders with never more than 1-2 layers, occasionally 3.
