After a 5 day trek gaining 10,000 ft of vertical elevation from the town of Lukla where the trek started after flying in from Kathmandu, I set out for the trek up Kala Pathar (“Black Rock”) at 4 AM in the morning to catch a view of sunrise on Mount Everest. The water in my bottle froze solid, and oxygen levels at this altitude were half of that at sea level. Taking off gloves at sub-zero temperature to fiddle with the buttons of the camera was not the most pleasant experience. The sun rose before I reached the summit, so took shots as I climbed up before finally reaching the summit of Kala Pathar (18,000ft of elevation above sea level) at 5:30 AM.
