May Day in its modern form emerged in the late XIX century in the labor movement, nominated as one of the basic requirements of the introduction of an eight-hour workday. May 1, 1886 the socialist, communist and anarchist organizations in the U.S. and Canada held a series of rallies and demonstrations. In the dispersal of a demonstration in Chicago on May 4 killed six demonstrators. In the ensuing mass protests against police brutality in a bomb explosion followed firefight killed at least eight policemen and four workers (according to some estimates, up to fifty killed and wounded several dozen people were injured. After being convicted in the bombing of four workers anarchists were sentenced to be hanged (later it was proved that the accusation was false). It is in memory of those executed the Congress of Paris II International (July 1889) announced on May 1st Day of solidarity of workers all over the world and invited each year to celebrate his demonstrations to social demands
