Owl Butterfly (Caligo sp.)

These beautiful butterflies get their name from their beautiful wing patterns, thought to be a form of mimicry to ward off potential predators. Small animals hesitate to go near patterns resembling eyes with a light-colored iris and a large pupil.

They are found in the rainforests and secondary forests of Mexico, Central, and South America.
