I spent the last week roaming around Valley of Fire and Death Valley N.P., two places I’d wanted to shoot for a long while now. I dreaded getting days on end of nothing but blue skies, but I actually encountered great conditions—lots of clouds, some nice color displays, and decent light as well. This shot is from the first morning of the trip. I hadn’t had time to scout anything so hiked up to Elephant Rock hoping it would work as a sunrise location. I absolutely hit the jackpot this first morning, getting a killer sky on the first try! Perfect way to kick off the trip. There were some good skies during the rest of the trip, but nothing would come close to this display.
Both locations really need a lot of time to do justice, I came back with a handful of useable images, but also a BUNCH of one-offs, needing a few more cracks at those particular locations to dial in comps and luck out with good light. That’s why I’m planning on heading down there again next year! Have to thank David Thompson for coming out and shooting one afternoon. I got to see the man get all giddy over his new 5dIII--- looks to be a crazy good camera and a low light monster! I also had the privilege of running into Bill Ratcliff as well.
