Casey Creek · Herman Creek Trail · Columbia River Gorge · Cascade Locks · Oregon · USA

Tucked steeply away below a stand of old-growth Douglas-fir punctuating an idyllic forest campsite, Casey Creek meanders gently through a mossy glen before joining in the raucous cavalcade of whitewater that is its much bigger brother Herman Creek. A loose scramble path requiring a deliberate pace, steely nerves, and strategic use of ferns and trees as handholds leads you down to this verdant sanctuary. It's here that I had my first earnest opportunity to flex my new Sony a7R's substantial low-shadow-noise and high-resolution muscle (trust me, it's impressive), but it's also here that I considered some parallels between the intimate scene that lay before me and where my most personal photographic interests tend to gravitate. Don't get me wrong...I love a grand mountain vista with a cloud-streaked sky set afire by a low sun as much as anybody, but it's here amidst a babbling brook in a secluded vale, beneath a cathedral ceiling of evergreens soaring hundreds of feet above my head and a little ways off from the mainstream roar, that my resonant frequency seems to ring truest.
