Gollum is an 11-month old White-Handed (AKA Lar) Gibbon born at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Chonburi Province, Thailand. Unfortunately she had a traumatic experience early on in her life, when for reasons no one can know for sure, her mother bit off three of her fingers and a thumb.

Luckily the ever-vigilant keepers at the Gibbon Islands were quick to rescue her and the wonderful team at the animal hospital were able to treat Gollum's hand and return her to good health.

The sad thing is though, that they don't wish to take the chance of reintroducing little Gollum to her mother, so she currently stays by herself up at the hospital cared for by the staff there and visited by my daughter and me whenever we're up there too.

Gollum has a blue blanket that has become her surrogate mother, and cries when her keepers try to replace it with another while that one is being washed. My daughter gave Gollum one of her old cuddly bear toys, but again it's no substitute for Gollum's security blanket and certainly not for her mother.

No one seems to know right now where Gollum will be kept when she grows older, so for now everyone is simply treating her as one of the family at the hospital.
