This huge coal digging machine works in the gigantic open-cast mining pit owned by 'RWE Power AG' in Germany. Many of these machines work continuously and automatically to find coal to power the nearby power plant. One machine can excavate about 110.000 m3 a day.

On the edge of the steep dirt cliff lies the ghost town of Pier. A place 1291 persons lived in 2005. They are now relocated and all the houses are boarded up ready for demolition. The persons in the last house were moving out when we drove by. Quite surreal too see and it was a weird atmosphere over the area. Soon will the big earth-eating machine erase this, and other small towns, for good.

The shot is actually two handheld shots with 50mm stitched together. Notice the small persons to the left.
