It is said that if you pluck Lehua (the red flower) from Ohi'a (the bush) it will rain in the Volcano region. Legend has it that Ohi'a was a handsome man and Pele was quite attracted to him. When she came to ask, Ohi'a spurned her advances, saying that he was totally and utterly in love with Lehua. Pele, being a rather unkind goddess, turned him into a bush for his fidelity, separating him from Lehua forever. Lehua cried endlessly and begged Pele to turn her into a flower so they might always be together, but Pele refused. The other gods, seeing the mistreatment Pele had done to Lehua and Ohi'a, did Lehua the service of turning her into a beautiful red flower that sits on the Ohi'a bush. And thus, if separated, you get showered with tears.
Now, to be fair, Hawaii is an incredibly rainy island with unpredictable weather due to the active volcano. But it is a charming story.
