On a recent trip to South Dakota, I happened upon this abandoned homestead. I wondered about the people who had lived here and what had become of them. As I was thinking, I remembered a song -- The Ballad of Hollis Brown -- written by Bob Dylan back in 1963. The song tells the story of a South Dakota farmer, who overwhelmed by hopelessness and desperation, kills his wife, his five children, and then himself. My hope is that the inhabitants of this building somehow fared better than Hollis Brown and his family.
