This photo is dedicated to 2nd Lt. Byron M. Speer. We attended college together and after undergraduate I went off to medical school and he went off to war. He was killed in action shortly after arrival in Viet Nam. I had other friends and classmates that served in that war. One wrote a Pulitzer Prize winning account of his experience, "Fortunate Son".

It was a different kind of war. It was a time for change in our society. All I know is that I was one of the fortunate ones and I have the deepest respect for those that served...and those that gave all.

This is a composite shot and I used the soldier with the "thousand yard stare" to portray the effect this war had on these men.....and then there's "The Wall".
