Yes, I know I've been away a long time again. That's what conducting five strait Great Northwest photo adventures followed by two and a half weeks of backpacking across the Olympic rainforest will get you - zero time online!!! .....wait....why am I here again, what am I doing....oh no! It's got me! It's got me again! Ack! ......

This photograph is one from a coastal tour I was conducting in mid-May. I've been to this spot many, many times on Oregon's coast and it's one of the absolute best places to get an amazing array of wave action in the shot, as it's not uncommon for 15-foot high rollers to break across these rocks here and blow up in your face! That's exactly what they were doing on this evening and I was able to capture some nice 'waterfalls' over the rocks with 1/2 second exposures. What I had never seen here though was an absolutely spectacular show of light, and that's also what we received this evening!

The light beams were amazing this evening in that thick coastal air and I had to record two exposures as quickly as possible to control dynamic range, but doing so can be tricky when working the ocean. I wanted the best possible wave action in my shot but the sun only peeked out to illuminate the scene as you see here for only seconds at a time, leaving me less than a minute to capture the second shot (two shots taken at separate times would not blend together naturally because of the light change). Fortunately, the waves and light cooperated together for a rare show. Something I haven't seen on the coast in a long time!

Lastly, this was taken with my new camera for these recent travels, my Nikon D800. I have switched systems but also retained my Canon equipment in case Canon does anything that impresses me a lot anytime soon. I feel the advancements with the D800 are the largest I have seen in half a decade now and am thoroughly impressed in all regards with this new system.
