This is an image of a baby skimmer chick trying to swallow a fish that his father had just brought back to the nest. It is very interesting to watch the parents as they assist their little ones in eating. They flip the fish around in their beaks to try and soften it up . This makes it easier for the little chick to swallow and also they will try and clean off any sand that might be on the fish. They stay with the baby until the whole fish is finally swallowed. For several reasons. One so another bird will not steal it and also to make sure it can get one that large down. It can take them quite a while and they get so tired that they will rest for a few seconds before trying again. Amazing what these tiny little creatures can accomplish at such a young age.
