A peaceful glow seemed to envelop everything this particular Friday evening as I strolled through Laguna Beach, an upscale beach town that caters to hippies and artists. The original hotel, built in the late 19th century, burned to the ground less than 2 months after it was built. It has been rebuilt twice: once in 1888 after the fire, and once in 1930 after it was demolished due to speculation that its construction still posed a fire hazard! It is today one of the landmarks of this quaint town and of elegant coastal travel in California.
